Rising star British conductor Ben Gernon is making a name for himself across the globe. Following a year as a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and his Proms debut in 2014, we’re delighted to welcome him to the stage to conduct the RCM Wind Orchestra.

Their thrilling programme includes Gulda’s Concerto for cello and wind orchestra, starring RCM cellist Yaroslava Trofymchuk, and RCM alumnus Ralph Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite.

yaroslava-trofymchuk3Yaroslava Trofymchuk was born in Ukraine in 1993. She began studying cello at the age of 6 in the Rivne Music School, where she was studying with Professor Alina Kuhn. In 2011 Yaroslava graduated from the specialized Lysenko Music School in Kiev and the same year entered the National Music Academy of Ukraine, where she was studying with Professor Elena Chervova. In 2014 she entered the Royal College of Music and is currently studying under Professor Thomas Carroll, joining the third year of undergraduate programme.

Yaroslava is an RCM scholar, also generously supported by Geoff and Carole Lindey Award and Mark Zetland Foundation.

In recent years she has been laureate of various competitions, such as “Classical Meridian”, “Citta di Lanciano” and Stankovich International Competition. She was winner of Lysenko International Competition (2012, Kiev), where she also received a special prize – a bow by modern Ukrainian luthier, and won the Competition “Best performer”, award – cello by French luthier Charles Jacqueau.

She has participated in a number of international youth orchestras, such as the CEI Youth Orchestra (2010, Italy), I Culture Orchestra (2012, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia), Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (2014-2015, Austria, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland…)

She is also a keen chamber musician, during her studying in Ukraine she was constantly performing with her piano trio and string quartet.

She has participated in masterclasses with great cellists such as Dominique de Williencourt, Johannes Goritzki, Denis Severin, Anatoliy Nikitin, Alexander Rudin among others.

As a soloist Yaroslava has performed in Ukraine, Poland, Italy, Belorussia, Russia, France and England.
Yaroslava Trofymchuk plays a 19 century Charles Jacqueau cello which was provided for her as a prize in above named competition.
