About the Conference

This one-day conference will bring together some of the most prominent experts on International Sanctions led by our head of Public International Law, Pierre-Emmanuel Dupont, to discuss, present and argue the various perspectives pertaining to International Sanctions. Speakers include members of the International Law Association Study Group on UN Sanctions and International Law.

The proliferation of sanctions regimes enacted either by the UN Security Council, regional organisations or individual States against the economies of other countries, or specifically targeting certain entities and individuals, raises crucial and highly complex issues in terms of international responsibility, human rights, available remedies, and impact on cross-border trade and investment, amongst many others.

In light of the most recent developments, including those concerning Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Iran and a number of Arab countries, the London Centre of International Law Practice will host a one-day conference, bringing together some of the most prominent experts on international sanctions from academia, international organisations and legal practice. They will review together the current trends and prospects in the practice of sanctions and their implications for international business relations from the perspective of the targeted regime and the targeting regime, as well as legal challenges that sanctions are increasingly facing before various fora.

Objectives

This conference aims to provide a wide understanding of the law and practice of sanctions in a globalised world, primarily to policymakers, government officials, economic stakeholders, academics and legal practitioners of targeting and targeted States, but also of third States that may be affected by sanctions in a number of ways.

The discussion and findings of this conference will also be used to further shape the agenda of the International Law Association Study Group on UN Sanctions and International Law and to inform its work.
