All welcome for “Sviatyi Vechir” (Holy Christmas Evening)!
Among the Ukrainians, the most beloved of all festivities is Christmas. Its main feature is the evening meal or as it is called ‘Sviatyi Vechir’ in Ukrainian (‘Holy Evening’) and is filled with numerous customs and rituals. The customs include: decorating the house and dinner table with special attributes (didukh, garlic, hay and others),performing koliadky (‘carols’). Each ritual has its own meaning and purpose, as such a few wisps of hay on the embroidered table cloth as a reminder of the manger in Bethlehem.
Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain – London Branch invites to join on Saturday 6 January at the Ukrainian Cultural Community Centre to celebrate the birth of Christ.
