The Faculty of Business’ department of Human Resources & Organisational Behaviour at Greenwich University will be holding a seminar on 9 February – 5PM on ‘The Corruption and Informal Practices in Doing Business in Ukraine’.

The speaker is Dr Elena Denisova-Schmidt, University of St. Gallen, Switzerland (who also took part in the Platform Ukraine Symposium last October)

Seminar summary:

Ukraine is currently experiencing enormous political instability, resulting in the loss of the country’s territorial integrity and some of its population. One of the catalysts of Euromaidan, which is leading all the other protest movements, was the fight against corruption. Corruption is one of the main challenges to doing business in the country.

Based on an original data set of 625 firms, this presentation examines corruption practices among Ukrainian businesses by comparing different firm sizes, industries and regions. By coding the negatively connoted word ‘corruption’ into the more neutral ‘informal practices’ the practical norms that CEOs and managers use to get things done respondents were able to answer questions about corruption indirectly. This revealed information about some of the less reprehensible but more widespread forms of corruption, such as collusion, conflict of interest, cronyism and nepotism, fraud, gifts and hospitality, lobbying, abuse of power or office and influence peddling.
